Another Man Shot by ICE

I’m going to be honest with you – it is both infuriating and exhausting to have to report back with yet another violation against our citizens at the hands of ICE. And the grief only grows when it’s one of our own Texas neighbors.

On September 20th, 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez was shot in the back by ICE agents while completing a DoorDash delivery in Austin, Texas. The bullet struck dangerously close to his spine, putting him at risk of losing feeling in the left side of his body.

Any other individual would have been rushed to the hospital and given proper treatment. But not Wilber.

Instead, ICE agents took him briefly to the hospital, but then had him discharged and taken to a detention center before medical professionals could remove the bullet. Wilber was living with this bullet lodged in his back for nearly two weeks before finally being granted permission to get his operation. His wife wasn’t even allowed in the operating room. And just as quickly as he came off of anesthesia, ICE agents placed him in custody once more.

This treatment is inhumane. It’s unacceptable. And it demands accountability.

Just days ago we finally learned the identity of the ICE agent who shot and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston nearly three months ago. Government officials had been hiding the identity of this monster, even from members of Congress who were demanding answers. And even now that his name has been made public, that ICE officer has not been charged with a crime and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has defended the shooting as an act of self-defense.

Wilber is among the two dozen others who have been shot by masked, untrained, unqualified ICE agents since the start of the second Trump administration’s cruel immigration agenda. Lorenzo is among the six – including three U.S. citizens – who have died.

It’s stories like theirs that sow fear into the hearts of our friends and neighbors. It’s what keeps parents from sending their children to public schools or going to work. It’s what deteriorates trust in our law enforcement, our institutions, and our government.

Texans – and Americans all across the nation – deserve to feel safe in their own communities. And it is my firm belief that the only way we can achieve that is by abolishing ICE once and for all.

I understand that this isn’t a position that a lot of Democrats are taking publicly. But I, for one, refuse to stay silent when my fellow Texans are being gunned down by reckless ICE agents.

If elected to Congress, I will make it my priority to abolish ICE and work toward an immigration framework that secures our border responsibly while upholding basic human rights, protecting constitutional liberties, and reflecting on our values as a nation.

If you believe it’s time to end this cycle of cruelty and restore accountability, join me. Be one of 15,000 folks to sign my petition today to demand Congress ABOLISH ICE and their rampant abuses of power.
