Looking Back On Why I’m Here

With our final end-of-quarter fundraising deadline coming up in just a few days, I wanted to take a moment to pause, step back from the noise of the campaign trail, and share directly with you why I’m running to represent Texas’ 33rd Congressional District.
North Texas is where I was raised by a single mom who worked as a public school teacher to make ends meet. It’s where local YMCA mentors and coaches gave me the support to succeed. And today, my wife Aly and I are raising our two boys in those same public schools.
My journey from North Texas to playing as an undrafted linebacker in the NFL to serving in Congress is anything but ordinary. But that path was only made possible because this community invested in me. And you can bet I’m going to fight like hell for it every single day.

After football, I attended law school to focus on civil rights and voter protection. I served as a civil rights attorney and worked at Housing and Urban Development during the Obama administration to expand access to housing.
Watching my mom teach and my fight for voting rights both showed me what public service really means: when institutions fail working families, you don’t stand on the sidelines – you step up.
That same commitment to public service guided my decision last year when I chose to drop out of the Democratic Senate primary in Texas. I saw our party heading toward a bruising, a contested primary runoff at a moment when Texas Democrats – and our country – needed to stand together to take on the threats facing our democracy.
I put our shared cause ahead of personal ego because this fight was never about me. It has always been about serving the people who raised me and ensuring every working family in Texas has the opportunities that I had.
We are building a movement to fight for working families, protect voting rights, and finally hold Trump and his administration accountable. But we can’t do it without harnessing grassroots power to flip the House blue.
Our critical end-of-quarter fundraising deadline is just days away, and I don’t rely on corporate PAC money – our campaign is powered entirely by everyday people who care about the future of North Texas. If you’re ready to send a proven fighter to Congress who’ll stand up for working families and deliver for our community, please chip in to help me hit my final end-of-quarter deadline of the campaign.
Thank you for standing with me.
