My Thoughts on the RNC Convention in Dallas

Colin Allred speaking to a crowd.

Republicans ran in 2024 on campaign promises to bring costs down.

Ever since they won, the cost of everything has gone up, up, up. The cost of meat, eggs, childcare, healthcare, gas, utilities – you name it.

Growing up, my family was a working family. My mom raised me on her own, and she was a dedicated public school teacher. She worked harder than anyone I knew to provide for us and give me a good life, but things weren’t easy. So, when I see these Republicans straight up lying to working folks about lowering costs and claiming to fight for the working and middle class then turning their backs on them, I take that personally.

It seems that the only thing you can actually buy in this economy is something from Donald Trump’s government. If you grease the right palms with enough money, you can buy access and power. If you make a donation to Trump’s super PAC or support one of the Trump family’s many business endeavors, you’re smooth sailing. You’re doing great.

The rest of us? Not so much.

Trump 2.0 is the most corrupt government in the history of our country, and I’ll stop at nothing to win this race, get back to Congress, and hold this administration accountable. Because when we flip the House of Representatives, when we flip the Senate, that is exactly what we will do.

But frankly, we can’t just say that Trump is bad. We also have to put forth a positive, unifying vision of our own.

For far too long in the Democratic Party, we’ve relied too much on our accomplishments from the past to meet the moments of today. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (which the Supreme Court more or less gutted in a crucial decision earlier this spring). The Civil Rights Act. The Fair Housing Act. Social Security. Medicare. Medicaid. The list goes on.

We urgently need a new generation of civil rights laws and protections to meet this moment head-on and ensure working people everywhere can thrive.

If we don’t do this now, who knows what our elections could look like in the future. In fact, they’re already starting to look different, and it’s dangerous for American democracy.

The thing is, Trump and the GOP don’t want us to have a “normal” election.

They’re trying to ban – or, at the very least – severely restrict vote-by-mail, a method of voting that’s proven to be safe, secure, and particularly convenient for working people.

They’re trying to scare and intimidate voters at polling locations. You can bet they’ll be sending in ICE and the National Guard to key districts and states across the country.

They’re trying to make you think that your vote doesn’t matter. That their winning elections and holding power is inevitable, and that this is just the way the world works.

We cannot back down. We must stand up. We must vote anyway.

I know we can join together and put every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears we’ve got into winning this fight. And I know we’ll be victorious, because when we stick together, we are so much more powerful than a bunch of sycophants talking a bunch of nonsense.

Trump and Republicans thought they could racially gerrymander their way to power here in Texas, take five seats from the people, and easily hold their congressional majorities.

We’re going to prove them wrong.

When we retake control of Congress, I’m on a mission to ban gerrymandering nationwide, so nobody can ever pull that dirty trick again. I’ll fight to overturn Citizens United and get big money out of politics. To ban members of Congress AND the President from trading stocks so they can’t get rich sitting pretty in office.

Our government is meant to be for We the People, and it will be.

But power concedes nothing without a fight – so we must fight. Let’s do this thing.

Thank you for reading and for being by my side.
